WORLD WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
Time: 11am (AEST), 10:30am (ACST), 9:00am (AWST)
Boxing’s only eight-division world champion, Philippine Senator and regular WBA welterweight champion Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao (61-7-2) returns to face undefeated Super WBA Welterweight Champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (29-0-0) in a powerhouse 147-pound showdown, Sunday 21 July at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Possessing speed, power and tremendous boxing skills, Thurman represents the most dangerous challenger that the Hall of Famer Pacquiao has faced in his recent ring appearances. This high-stakes match will provide the winner with a firm claim for the top spot in one of boxing’s deepest and most talented divisions.
Manny Pacquiao has proved time and time again across his lengthy career that he remains one of international boxing’s adored champions. He still holds the record for the most pay per view buys in history, when he took on the infamous Floyd Mayweather, with 4.6 million purchases. Pacquiao is considered one of boxing’s top champion fighters of the past two decades and has left a lasting impact on the opponents he’s conquered. At some point in their careers, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Timothy Bradley and Lucas Matthysse were considered elite level fighters. But the aftereffects of fighting Pacquiao forced De La Hoya, Bradley and Matthysse to immediately retire.
Despite a lengthy break of 22 months as a result of an elbow and hand injury, Thurman has belief he has what it takes to topple the champion.
“I have no intention of losing to Manny Pacquiao,” he said. “I don’t see him winning any way, shape or form.”
As for Pacquiao, he’s looking to add just another chapter to his successful career.
“I’ve been in boxing for two decades and I’ve never been intimidated or scared of my opponent,” he said. “My time is not yet over. My journey will continue and that is what I want to prove come fight night.”
The undercard is nothing to pass over either, headlined by undefeated IBF Super Middleweight World Champion Caleb ‘Sweet Hands’ Plant making his first title defence to date, against unbeaten challenger, Mike Lee.
