Chan Sung Jung, better known as ‘The Korean Zombie, will return to fight on home soil for the first time since 2008. Headlining the UFC’s return to South Korea on December 21 when he meets fellow featherweight contender Frankie Edgar in a highly-anticipated five-round showdown.
A late change, Edgar got the call up after Ortega suffered an injury that forced him out of the fight. Edgar had a fight booked against Corey Sandhagen, just over a month away but still felt compelled to call the UFC to offer his services.
“I heard that Ortega was hurt and I went to my team and I touched base and I said if you need someone, I’m available,” Edgar explained when speaking to MMA Fighting.
“I feel like I was ready. My team liked the fight. Lately, I’m just about experiences and this is a good experience to have in my life. I’ve done a lot in this career. I’ve never taken a fight on two weeks’ notice across the country, so why not add that to the repertoire.”
Long term, Edgar says his future still lies in the bantamweight division but after going through an entire training camp getting ready for Jung last year, it felt like an opportunity too good to pass up even if it was on short notice.
Jung is coming in hot after a win over Renato Moicano in June. Stellar performance over the Brazilian, it was all over with a stunning 58-second knockout. Jung has gone 2-1 in his past three fights, with his only loss coming by way of a last-second elbow strike knock out from Yair Rodriguez.
Rounding out the card is flyweight standout Alexandre Pantoja taking on Matt Schnell. As well as light heavyweight contenders Volkan Oezdemir and Aleksandar Rakic.
