This September, the octagon is set for the long awaited match up between two former welterweight champions, Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley and Colby “Chaos” Covington. The fight was penciled for August, but was only scheduled this month.
Behind the scenes, it’s common knowledge that the two have shared fiery words, stemming from Covington’s adoption of his ‘Chaos’ persona and going on to attack Woodley publicly in hopes for a fight. The two also share a history as former training partners at American Top Team in Florida, which only adds fuel to their rivalry.
This head-to-head clash will not only bring their rivalry to life, but will also be an opportunity for the two to recover from recent losses.
Covington (15-2) claimed the interim welterweight title in June 2018, even after undergoing sinus surgery after his five round bout with Rafael dos Anjos. He continued on with a victory in his fight against Robbie Lawler in August last year.
However in his last outing, the second-ranked title contender took a serious beating and loss by current welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman in December 2019. “Chaos” was defeated via fifth-round TKO — no doubt a match that damaged his ego.
Similarly, fifth ranked contender, Woodley (19-1) is looking to make his ascent to top dog, with this latest fight against Covington a crucial one to get him closer to the title. The “Chosen One” looks to recover from back-to-back losses to Usman and Gilbert Burns. His loss to Usman in March 2019 was a major blow, seeing him lose his title belt, while his defeat to Burns just this May, was by unanimous decision.
Both have something to prove in this match, and the outcome will no doubt catapult one of them closer to the division champion.
