Former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington is apparently done waiting for his shot at the undisputed title and will instead return to action.
A main event showdown between Covington and former undisputed champion Robbie Lawler will headline the upcoming UFC Fight Night card in Newark, New Jersey in August.
It’s been a long and strange journey back into the cage for Covington, who it appears has consistently missed out on the title fight he’s been waiting for since September last year. Rather than wait for current champion, Kamaru Usman to be ready after undergoing surgery, Covington has opted to take on Lawler and cement his number one contender position in the division.
This bout is filled with feeling, with Covington and Lawler having a history together. Covington has come out swinging, not happy with Lawlers approach to leaving the American Top Team and leaving the ‘family’ behind.
“We had a good friendship, he helped me out with sponsors. But he turned his back on us, so it’s personal. I really do want to leave Robbie in a pool of his own blood.”
Lawler is on a two fight skid, he hasn’t won since a decision over Donald Cerrone at UFC 214 in July 2017. He is 1-2 since dropping the title to Woodley in 2016. Lawler was a champion, and defended the title successfully twice – for a year and a half. Now it’ll be up to him to prove he deserves to remain in the competition.
