The UFC’s return to New Mexico will have the main event to remember this February, as top light heavyweight contender Corey Anderson and Jan Blachowicz look to make their case for a shot at the belt when they square off for UFC Fight Night at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.
Anderson, who defeated Blachowicz in their first four years ago in UFC 191, was lobbying for his first-ever shot at UFC gold after knocking out Johnny Walker at UFC 244. UFC ultimately opted to give the fight to Reyes against Jones, and instead gave him a Polish bomber to prepare for, instead.
Blachowicz is meanwhile coming off a split decision victory over Ronaldo Souza at UFC Fight Night 164, giving him his second straight win after previously knocking out Luke Rockhold at UFC 239.
This rematch could determine the next challenger for the winner of the champion Jon Jones versus Dominick Reyes, which will also take place this February.
Anthony Smith, another fellow light heavyweight contender took aim at Anderson, saying he thinks Anderson took the easier path to a title shot.
“He’s a fun guy to go back and forth with, which is why I was hoping we would fight. That would be a really fun build-up, but I think he took the easier route.
He’s talking about all these things that he thinks he deserves, and he’s mad at me. He’s mad at Thiago Santos because we came in the division - I came in the division and had three fights and got a title fight. Corey Anderson has been in the division his entire career and hasn’t even sniffed a title shot yet.”
Is Smith setting up a match in the future if Anderson comes out on top?
Rounding out the card is welterweight duo Diego Sanchez vs Michel Pereira. As well as light heavyweight contenders Devin Clark up against Gadzhimurad Antigulov.
