The return of a titan.
Mike Tyson will make his grand comeback to the ring against no other than Roy Jones Jr in a blockbuster exhibition match.
Despite it being an exhibition, the WBC has gotten behind the bout, adding that the two legends of the sport will be competing for a Frontline Battle belt, to add to the change in format, the bout will be scored by a panel of three champions using the WBC’s remote scoring program.
The former undisputed heavyweight world champion, Tyson was known as the baddest man on the planet, as he added prolific sporting achievements to his resume he grew a reputation outside of the sport with multiple public scandals.
The fight will be Tyson’s first sanctioned bout since losing to Kevin McBride in 2005, however he has no intentions of taking it easy.
“If the opportunity comes, I’m always looking for it.”
Finishing his career, Tyson walked away with a record of 50-6 with 44 total knockouts. In the 27 fights that were tracked by CompuBox, Tyson landed 56% of his power punches, 15% higher than the heavyweight average.
Roy Jones Jr is a legend in his own right.
The former four division champion tallied 66 wins with just 9 losses in his entire career, also still holding the record as the only boxer in history to start his professional career in the lightweight category, and go on to win a heavyweight title.
Considered one of the best boxers of all time, he left his mark in the sports history upon winning the WBA heavyweight title in 2003, becoming the first former middleweight champion to win a heavyweight title in 106 years. Known for possessing exceptional hand speed, athleticism, movement and reflexes, Jones is well prepared heading into a bout with someone once dubbed as the most dangerous man on the planet.
Honestly, you'd have to be a fool not to," Jones said.
"Going into the ring with one of the most dangerous men to ever grace the boxing ring. One of the hardest punchers in heavyweight history, the youngest heavyweight champion of all time. You going to not prepare? Are you crazy? You should prepare just as hard as the last time you went in the ring."
Jones said he was retired and had no plans of fighting again but when this opportunity came knocking he couldn't refuse.
"I thought I was done," Jones said. "When I got the call from my team saying 'Mike Tyson wants to fight you' — that's bucket-list material.
"Everywhere I go in life, people ask me 'Hey, did you ever fight Mike Tyson?' Now I don't have to say 'No' no more."
