Taking place later this month, on the aptly named Fight Island, Dan Ige will face Calvin Kattar in a featherweight bout.
Scheduled for mid-July, Joseph Benavidez will get his shot at Deiveson Figueiredo and a shot at the vacant flyweight title.
Meeting on Sunday 19 July, the two will go head to head for the vacant title. A rematch from a bout in February where Figueiredo defeated Benavidez in a second round knock out.
What was originally meant to crown a new flyweight champion after the title was left empty by two division champ Henry Cejudo, but Figueiredo missing weight by 2.5 pounds caused a stir, and the title remained vacant.
Benavidez has been in world title contention before, coming close but faltering due to a decision defeat from Dominick Cruz in a previous bantamweight title fight, and previously to Demetrious Johnson in an earlier flyweight title bout.
Although never holding a belt, Benavidez is of the idea he's been the best in his class at certain times in the past.
“It’s really weird, but being the best in the world is a fleeting thing, because you have to do it on the day the title fight is held, I believe I was the best on any given day over the last 10 years in two different weight classes. But on the day that I had to prove it, it was out of my grasp for whatever reason.
Fighting is such a crazy sport and anything can happen, but doing what I’ve done has given me the confidence and belief that I am good enough to be called the best in the world.”
For Benavidez, he takes the original missed weight personally.
“Missing weight doesn’t come down to a one-pound or a two-pound difference, whatever people talk about,” Benavidez said. “It’s a lot more than that. He was walking around so big and was undisciplined for weeks before that. To get to the weight we’re going to like we’re supposed to professionally that day, it takes weeks of transforming your body. If you don’t do that and you’re not putting in the work to start transforming your body, that’s when you start missing weight.”
With Figueiredo having the controversial win stripped, he’ll be out for blood. Watch all the action live at the Official Home of UFC, find your local pub below.
