The end of this month will see a heavyweight bout between top contenders, Curtis Blaydes and Alexander Volkov.
As the UFC ramps up their schedule for the next few months, Blaydes vs Volkov will headline the June 20 Fight Night bout, originally scheduled to take place in Saskatoon. With the bout falling victim to event cancellations worldwide, the coronavirus impacted this too, but luckily, with both fighters remaining healthy and ready to go, the card has been rescheduled.
Blaydes is currently ranked number three in the heavyweight division, coming off back to back wins over genuine contenders, Junior Dos Santos and Shamil Abdurakhimov. However, the two losses in his career have come from the same man, Francis Ngannou.
Volkov is ranked number seven in the division, the Russian native is fresh off a decision win over Greg Hardy to bounce back after a last second knock out loss to Derrick Lewis.
Overall, Volkov carries a 5-1 record in the UFC with other notable wins over the likes of Fabricio Werdum, Stefan Struve and Roy Nelson.
Although the rescheduled bout is taking place, Blaydes has voiced his hope for a title fight, and with an impressive record like his, you’d be right in thinking he’d be very close. But he wasn’t willing to sit around for other fights to happen before he gets his shot, and a win over Volkov would be the stepping stone to put him right on track for a title shot.
Volkov, the clear underdog is adamant about continuing his winning streak after his last bout, and could that be all he needs to get right back where he needs to be?
Main Card showing live from 11AM AEST | 10:30AM ACST | WA 9AM (undercard will show earlier).
