UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has run through all of his opposition, and he doesn’t see his next fight going any differently.
Nurmagomedov is looking to unify the lightweight titles come September, when he takes on interim champion Dustin Poirier in UFC 242. Poirier isn’t on the same page, equally determined to unify the lightweight belts after three of his last four victories came against current or former UFC champions. The American, who fused solid striking and formidable ground game to end Max Holloway’s 13-fight UFC win streak and claim the interim lightweight belt in April said, “I’m focused on making history and taking (Khabib) to places he has never been. I feed off good energy and I’m ready to rock. I’ll be myself, go out there and show the world what I’m capable of. Two champions are going in and one champion is coming out – it’s going to be huge.”
Nurmagomedov is coming off the biggest win of his career, a now infamous dominant fourth-round submission finish over Conor McGregor, which marked his first title defense. With a strong winning streak, the Russian believes he’s on another level than Poirier.
“This is what I want to do. Doesn’t matter – Dustin, Tony or other opponents. Doesn’t matter. When I go to the cage, I maul my opponents. All my life, 27-0. People talk about his six fight win streak, what about my 27 win streak? Eleven years undefeated. I don’t understand this guy. I know he’s a tough challenge, but this guy is not on my level.”
