It’s finally time to settle the welterweight unified title, is it Yordenis Ugas or is it Errol Spence Jr?
In front of what could be a capacity crowd at the AT&T Stadium, Sunday 17 April will see the two battle it out for the ultimate title.
Errol Spence Jr, the Olympic gold medalist was able to defeat Manny Pacquiao last August in what proved to to be the final professional bout for ‘Pac-Man’ before heading into ‘official’ retirement.
The contest was initially supposed to be Spence Jr vs Pacquiao, up until the former suffered an injury to the left eye.
Now with the WBC, WBA and IBF welterweight titles on the line, Spence Jr has the chance to extend his record in the sport to 28-0, a feat unmatched by many.
In a recent interview, Spence Jr wasn’t afraid to give his honest opinion of both Ugas and Pacquiao as the countdown to fight night continues.
“This is going to be a great fight. Ugas always come to compete. With all respect to Pacquiao, I’m a far different fighter than Pacquiao, and at this point, I’m a better fighter,” Spence told Showtime.
“You keep bringing up Pacquiao, but that’s like Larry Holmes fighting [Muhammad] Ali [mismatch] or Terry Norris beating up Sugar Ray Leonard. Or [Marcos] Maidana beating up Erik Morales.
“Pacquiao is way past his prime. It was the passing of the torch to myself, but I missed the opportunity, so I’m just going to put on a great performance.
“Ugas is a real warrior, but I’m hungry too. I’m not letting this opportunity pass by me.
“I’m going to put on a great performance for my crowd.”
On heading into the fight, Ugas is aware of the underdog title that’s been thrown at him. He has this to say ahead of the bout.
“It doesn’t matter if I am the underdog or the favorite. The form goes right out of the window on occasions like this. I was the underdog against Pacquiao and I made history. So being the underdog doesn’t intimidate me,” Ugas said.
“It’s an honor to be in the same ring as Spence. We are competing for three belts, but we are also fighting for honor and prestige.”
A huge welterweight fight that will determine the unified champion from the contender, don’t miss it.
