Paul Gallen has proven himself in the boxing world for months now, taking on heavyweight after heavyweight and proving himself, will this fight be his undoing?
This June, Gallen will come up against his strongest opponent yet, the Australian heavyweight champion, Justis Huni.
Gallen goes into the bout with wins over MMA legend Mark Hunt and former world champion Lucas Browne in the last six months, but this will be his toughest test by some margin. In rugby league, Gallen is known for building his career by setting the football field on fire, known for pushing his boundaries with what you should and shouldn’t be doing. He’ll be taking that fire into this bout, already fired up and ready to go in the heated exchanges the two have had so far.
Meanwhile, Justis Huni is being touted as the best heavyweight Australia has ever produced and will likely represent Australia at the Tokyo Olympics with legitimate hopes of securing a gold medal.
This could all be on the line, as he goes into the bout with Gallen. Going into the bout, Huni took home a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships as an amateur. As a professional Huni is four for four, three wins by knockout and one by decision, although the professional career may not seem like much for now, at just 22, experts have predicted that Huni will carry the torch for Australia long into the future.
There was no love lost between the two, with Gallen and Huni making it known they’re not fans of the other. During the NRL’s ‘magic round’ in May, Gallen was working for channel nine at the time with Huni sitting in the stands just metres away.
There were huge cheers when the camera zoomed in on Huni and he sent a ‘thumbs down’ in Gallen’s direction. That was met with Gallen flipping the bird as the crowd erupted in boos.
The next incident to fan the flames was the promotional poster, in it, Huni is portrayed as the Terminator because, according to his promoter Dean Longergan, ‘Paul Gallen’s boxing career is about to be terminated on June 16.”
The fight goes down Wednesday 16 June, find out where to watch.
