Canelo Alvarez, one of the best boxers in history, is just one fight away from achieving something that no other Latin boxer has ever achieved in his upcoming fight against Caleb Plant. Both fighters will aim to be the first official holder of the unified super middleweight title, and both fighters aren’t letting the opportunity slip through their fingers.
Canelo (56-1-2), will put his unified WBC, WBO and WBA super middleweight titles on the line. Remaining undefeated for eight years, Canelo goes into the bout a heavy favourite, but he’ll still have his work cut out for him.
Caleb Plant (21-0-12) also remains unbeaten, albeit for a much smaller period of time. Plant will put his IBF super middleweight belt on the line as he goes after a shot at glory.
If the press conference was anything to go off between the two, we’re in for a heated fight. Kicking off the promotion, Alvarez touched up his opponent with a quick counter that left Caleb Plant with a cut below his right eye after their face-off got a little too heated.
“I’ve never been involved in that type of confrontation before in my career,” Canelo tells Complex Sports. “But there’s a first time for everything.”
On the upcoming match, Canelo had this to say.
“I hope he has a good chin because he’s going to need it on fight night.
“I’m always ready. I just can’t wait. I feel strong and fast. With all of the talk, it’s become personal. He crossed a line. But I have to remain focused, because this is a very important fight for me.
“Caleb has good boxing skills. He has good movement and a good jab. But it’s nothing new for me. I know what I need to do. I need to be patient in the early rounds and then start doing my job.
“Even harder than getting to the top is staying there. That’s why I try to get better each and every day. That’s what I’ve been trying to do from my first fight up until now.
“I’m 100% focused on this fight. There’s nothing else crossing my mind. After it’s over, we’ll figure out who the next opponent will be.
“Being the undisputed champion is huge for my legacy. Not only would it be an honor to be the first Latin American fighter to do it, but there’s only a select club of fighters who have achieved this. Eddy and I said in the beginning that the goal was to be undisputed, and now we’re one fight away.”
